Following the non-indictment of Darren Wilson, the police officer who shot and killed teenager Michael Brown of Ferguson, Missouri as well as the subsequent killing of Eric Garner of Staten Island, New York, our members felt compelled to show solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. We started with a vigil to mourn lives of those black lives lost and received an unexpected, yet amazing outpouring of community support. From there, we have successfully organized a series of protests in the City of Portland, and we even got a group together to attend the Millions March in NYC.
From these combined events and passions we decided to start an organization that seeks political, social, and economic justice for people of color. We look forward to organizing in the future, holding politicians accountable, mentoring students of color, providing community education, and fostering POC love.
